Water…so much imagery!

Water…I love the imagery of water. It can be still and calm like a lake on a summer’s day. It can be turbulent and rough like the rapids of a rushing river. It can provide comfort on a hot day, it can clean the dirt off of something. When you want to just be alone and think you can sit by the edge of a stream by yourself – or you can grab a few friends and family members and jump in and splash around and get crazy! You can dip your toe in just a little or dive in and submerse yourself in it. It can take on multiple forms – liquid, solid or gas. It can be a small little puddle on the side of the road or the vastness of the ocean. It can quench your thirst – without it we couldn’t survive. It is in us – making up over 70% of our body! So, whatever your state of mind or your mood you can probably find a way for water to describe it – at least I can.
Of course, there’s one other water – The Living Water that is Christ Jesus. As we read of his life in the bible we see many of these same images: gentleness when he healed the blind man; turbulent when tossing the tables in the temple; peacefulness as he taught us to pray to The Father.
And then there is that life giving imagery. That the water He provides us quench our souls! It will give us eternal life – as we are told in John 4:14 , “but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
Jesus offers us this water today but how will you respond? Are you going to dip your toe in the edge? See how it feels and then pull it back out? Or will you jump in. Submerse yourself in Him. Let the water that only He can provide flow through you, live in you – so that it pours out of you!
